What happens during a usability test?

  • During a usability test, a respondent uses the website or product while the moderator observes and asks questions.
  • Prior to the test, you will work with the moderator to determine a set of scenarios users should attempt in the test.  The scenarios should incorporate actions you want users to be able to accomplish on your website or with your product. Here are some real life examples:
    • "Let's say you are remodeling your kitchen, and you want to find the equipment that goes over the stove and removes heat or smoke, what would you do?" (What does the user call this item?  Where does the user look for it?)
    • "If you wanted to find out which dishwasher is best, what would you do?  (Can the user understand how to use site navigtion?)
    • "What if you wanted your TV to automatically turn off after 1 hour, what would you do?"  (What does the user call the "sleep timer"?  In what menu does the user look for it?)
    • "Before you start using this website, just walk me through what you see here."  (What is the user's "mental model"?  What are the user's expectations?)
